Facebook pressed the big button, eh? lol

@daedalus at least someone had the guts, bitterly disappointed in Google

auspol

@twiddlekins Google is in a worse negotiating position because of its vertical integration of search and ad networks and abuse of monopoly power thing.
Facebook is a place people hang out, rather than a thing people use to figure out where to go (and see billboards on the way)

auspol

@daedalus oh I dunno, I don't think FB aren't in the same position as Google in the ad and news aggregation space.

auspol

@daedalus for better or worse FB is a containerised single source of news for a huge percent of the population.

auspol

@twiddlekins Yes, but it doesn't need news even more than Google. People will still hang out there to chat because news isn't the reason they're going there.
It will not affect their ability to sell ads one iota.

auspol

@daedalus I don't really see how it would have effected Googles ability to do so either had they not just decided to fund the very worst of Australian media.

auspol

@daedalus I wouldn't have thought Google needed news either but I guess they felt otherwise *shrug*

auspol

@daedalus Just find it incredibly weird that we're now in a place where companies are paid to have traffic driven to them rather than the other way around.

auspol

@twiddlekins They're getting paid protection money because of a government shakedown.

auspol

@daedalus be interesting to see the distribution of funds to news organisations of particular political leanings.. I mean we already know what direction that distribution would skew.

auspol

@twiddlekins Complicated by their relative market shares. NewsCorp dominates because ACCC didn't stop them.

auspol

@twiddlekins It's much harder for Google to pull out of the market because of how its stuff works, and the amounts they're paying news orgs are *tiny*. Plus I see some of it is in ad credits, which is money they print themselves.
They get much bigger gains overall.

auspol

@daedalus yes I suppose at the end of the day they're not going to say yes to anything that isn't at best negligible and likely profitable

auspol

@daedalus yup they finally blocked the BOM and Newcastle City Council

auspol

@purserj It's almost like Facebook isn't able to safely wield the amount of power the government let them accumulate.

auspol

@daedalus I tried getting around it with VPN and location services disabled on the phone. But nope.

auspol

@ozguvnor It's about the target, not the source. The target is unaffected by your VPN.

auspol

@daedalus I still couldn’t hit BBC News from USA as a VPN source!? 🤔

auspol

@daedalus I’ll try obfuscated servers option on the personal laptop later

auspol

@ozguvnor Yeah, I think that's because your account has you as Australian.
